Is Wordle Hard Mode Worth Turning On?
What hard mode changes, who it helps, and whether it makes you a better daily Wordle player.
Hard mode in Wordle forces you to use every green and yellow clue from previous guesses. You cannot ignore a revealed letter - which sounds strict, but many players swear by it.
What hard mode actually does
If a letter is green, every later guess must place it in that spot. If it is yellow, every later guess must include that letter somewhere else. You cannot “burn” a guess testing unrelated letters.
Pros and cons
- Pro: Trains discipline - fewer random guesses.
- Pro: Often leads to cleaner solve paths.
- Con: Less flexibility when you want to test new letters.
- Con: Can feel punishing on tricky puzzles.
Hard mode is not “better” - it is a different challenge. Try it for a week and see if your average guess count improves. You can always switch back in settings.
